Still On the Towers and Sky Scrapers Trail…Rogers ‘Cheese Grater’ Melts Under The Crunch

image: Sky Scrappers News

Rogers Stirk Harbour & Partners’ 47-storey “cheese grater” tower in the City of London has become the latest victim of the credit crunch.

The tower has been shelved due to a drop in demand for office space.

In a statement to the stock exchange today (Thursday 14th August), developer British Land said it was delaying the £286 million project, which is currently on site.

havent we seen all of this before under the name of Archigram? eVolo have re-dressed it and given it a new name!

Dont get me wrong, im dont dislike archigram or eVolo,,, but lets not forget that a crazy concept like this will get “value engineered” sooner or later! LOL

Archigram http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Archigram was pretty impressive and still inspires me today! http://www.designmuseum.org/design/archigram It encourages grand ideas, joined up thinking, and above all – a vision for a better life…. The people who dreamed up archigram (Peter cook amongst others) http://www.bartlett.ucl.ac.uk/architecture/people/showcase/01-02/archigram.htm were really passionate about creating a “Utopia” and an “Ideal City” http://archigram.net/projects_pages/walking_city.html

Archigram were revolutionary in many ways than their architectural vision. For me it was their ability to communicate their ideas through publish-media. eVolo are clearly taking that publishing idea into the internet generation.
It is a much needed space for free thinking and exploration of diverse ideas. What I would like to really see though is one of these ideas coherently developed at conceptual level rather than always stopping short with good graphics and generative modelling.
It’s the human element that I feel they lack. How does the human occupy these structures…from a social, economically, politically…point of view?

im not so sure about th architectural credibility of a “can of ham”

first we had a giant penis, now a tin of ham….

im not against high rise buildings, so if a well designed sky scraper is positioned near th gherkin its not a problem, but some of these glamorous / sexy images just seem to try to make each and every different skyscraper look individual and iconic…

not EVERY building can be an iconic structure,,, some of these are just plain NAFF!

It’s a bit lazy of architects these days though; to just pick an ‘object’ and FORCE a building out of it never mind its context! Its like designers are running out of inspirations…or just plain lazy.

It is rather an old trend tough. Remember this:

    http://dianegreenseid.files.wordpress.com/2007/05/chiatdaywp1.jpg

    Plain weird….

Maybe i should make a blog-collection of all the literal-object buildings!!
    That would be fun.
Can you remember the one in the 60’s which looked like a DUCK…? I think it was a church or something…

    yep i found it:

not necessarily a tower or sky scrapper but it makes my point above.

could you make a gallery on flickr with all the “object” buildings,,,

once rounded up they can be deposited into room 101

It is a shame to learn that the “cheese grater” wont be built… of all the towers proposed (some of which were truely awful) I thought this one was one of the better ones.

Did you know the reason it is slanted is to preserve existing views of st pauls… see – not all that bad after all is it! LOL

It goes to show just how sensitive things are getting right now with the Credit Crunch. I do hope it gets built in the end though.

Lets not forget that newly elected Boris Johnson has been cancelling London tower projects left right and centre! Maybe the so called “credit crunch” is not always to blame for projects being shelved?

Politics is an old dirty game and here it really comes out baring its teeth. It’s all to do away with policies that Ken proposed…good or bad. Appalling really to think that public money will be paying for all this new sweeping changes.

Does anyone think that “we” may be unwittingly creating the slums of tommorrow with these “utopian, glamorous, sexy, amazing towers?

    One example is Paris –

So, after Boris the Bumbling Major cancels all of Ken Livingstones carefully laid plans he does a U – turn and changes his mind…

why are some politicians such idiots?!
I swear Boris’ ego just took over! All he wanted to do was flex the extent of his power!
